Founded by optometrist Bill Matthews in 1957, Matthews Eyecare is a 3rd-generation family-owned business.
We started life in Blenheim and Nelson, and have grown into New Zealand’s largest independent optometry group. To this day, we have remained passionate about and focused on, Bill’s vision – to provide the very best clinical care to people and their communities.
In 1985 Bill's son Philip and his wife Lynley took over and through a combination of acquisition and joint venture have grown Matthews to 20 practices nationwide. Under Phil and Lynley's guidance, we're on a mission to keep independent optometry alive.
The arrival of global corporates and online retailers has made optometry less personal and removed opportunities for the next generation of eye care professionals to work in their local communities. But at Matthews, we believe in choice and we choose to deal with suppliers who share our principles and employ staff who share our passion. Most importantly, we can immerse ourselves in our communities and connect with our customers on a much deeper, more impactful level.
